Grandmasters can play ball

It is but on rare occasions we get to see Grandmasters playing sports other than chess.

Participants of the [event]Sao Paolo-Bilbao Grand Slam Final 2012[/event] dressed up in rubber shoes and jerseys to play basketball the day before the opening ceremony. In the picture above you'll see [player]Levon Aronian[/player] tries to get past the defense of [player]Sergey Karjakin[/player] while [player]Magnus Carlsen[/player] waits in the background.

A FIDE Master Title for Elite GM's

William of OnlineChessLessons.net offered a strong argument why FIDE should introduce an official Super-GM title for 2700+ rated chess players.

In 1972 there were 88 GMs and in 2012 there are now over 1200 GMs! However the vast majority (around 95%) of Grandmasters are rated between 2400 and 2699 FIDE. After the recent Chess Olympiad 2012 in Istanbul, there are now a total of 50 Super-GMs rated over 2700 FIDE.

Read more about Should FIDE have a Super-GM title for 2700+ GMs?

Personally, I'm in favor of his proposal of an official distinct FIDE title awarded to "elite" GM's in order to separate them from, well, the not-so-elite ones. FIDE may not necessarily use a 2700 ELO rating cut-off, but they could devise certain criteria for eligibility.

However, I advise against the use of the "Super-GM" name. It's kind of hyperbole -- it's super and it's grand. Besides, what if in the future another higher title is warranted, what will it be called, a Hyper-Super-GM?

Instead, I suggest they take out the "Grand" prefix and change it to a higher comparative status. They could use, for example, Prime Master -- PM for short. Grab a thesaurus and take your pick. This way, they can be flexible in the future to add a higher title, or even interim titles -- e.g., higher than the Grandmaster but below the highest title whatever they choose to call.

Hiarcs Chess Explorer for Mac -- First Impressions

So I finally took the plunge and purchased my own copy of Hiarcs Chess Explorer for Mac, because no one wants to sponsor one for me.

And here are my first impressions:

  • I've tried game analysis, the feature that I'm always looking forward to when trying out a chess software. It's working great, at least as far as with the UCI engines that I was able to use the software with.

  • There's a limited number of UCI engines that are compatible only for Mac, especially free engines, as there are available for Windows. So far what I have are the stock Houdini 14, Stockfish 2.2.2 and Fruit (05/11/03).

  • With the three UCI engines available for my Mac, I can't really test their playing strengths against each other because there's no engine match feature in the Hiarcs Chess Explorer software. (See update below).

This list will be updated for further impressions.

What about you? How do you find Hiarcs Chess Explorer, for Mac or even Windows?

UPDATE (September 16, 2012):

I have the following UCI engines (besides Hiarcs 14, which comes with the purchase) successfully running on Hiarcs Mac Chess Explorer:

  • Critter 1.6a 64-bit;

  • Fruit 05/11/03;

  • Komodo64 3;

  • Stockfish 2.3 64-bit;

If I missed a strong UCI engine that you think I should try out, please let me know in the comments below.

Tromso 2014 World Chess Olympiad

Following the end of the [event]Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad[/event], everyone is looking forward to the next biennial Chess Olympiad, to be held at the City of Tromso in [country]Norway[/country], the home country of [player]Magnus Carlsen[/player].

Here's Magnus promoting Tromso when they were yet campaigning last year:

For sure, ChessHive.com will still be around to cover the event two years from now, to bring you the latest, especially about Team [country]Philippines[/country].

30th Chess Olympiad

Did you know that: the 30th Chess Olympiad in 1992 was held in Manila, [country]Philippines[/country]?

Here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia entry:

Following the fall of the Iron Curtain, the field of competitors was quite different from previous Olympiads. Twelve of the 15 former Soviet republics now competed as independent nations - and they all finished in the top half. Meanwhile, an all-German team was present for the first time since World War II. Of the former Yugoslav republics, Croatia, Bosnia, and Slovenia appeared independently; Serbia-Montenegro and Macedonia did not. This Olympiad also marked the final appearance of Czechoslovakia and the re-appearance of South Africa.

There were actually three (3) contingent teams from Philippines that time. The top contingent, led by GM [player]Eugene Torre[/player], finished 31st place, while the other two were 42nd and 44th -- that's out of the total 102 countries/teams competing.

And the Manila Chess Olympiad happened even before GM [player]Wesley So[/player] was born.

Philippines vs. Romania Results in Round 11 Istanbul 2012

Team [country]Philippines[/country] certainly has run out of luck in the last three rounds of the [event]Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad[/event]. It started with a devastating loss to China in Round 9, a draw to Vietnam in Round 10, and now a loss to Romania in Round 11.

[player]Wesley So[/player] in Board 1 is the top player we expected to deliver the upsets against the opposing teams, even against the higher-rated players as he used to do in the past, has settled with 2 wins and 9 draws in the course of the tournament.

Running Fritz 12 on a Mac via Crossover

Fritz 12 is a great chess product that unfortunately has no Mac version. I've installed it on a Bootcamp partition, and it works great. But I hate rebooting to Windows everytime I need it. Besides, all my files are in the OS X partition.

I also tried running Fritz 12 in a Parallels Desktop. It works fine as well, but then I have to boot Windows on top of OS X, which in the process they're sharing the same computer's resources, which proves to be an inefficient environment to run a resource hungry application like Fritz 12. I was only able to assign 3GB of RAM out of the total installed 8GB, and the application can only utilize 1 CPU out of the total 4.

So what about Codeweaver's Crossover? Well, this is how it looks like:

[caption id="attachment_855" align="alignnone" width="500"]Fritz 12 on a Mac via Crossover Screenshot: Fritz 12 on a Mac via Crossover[/caption]

Notice how the black pieces have turned into. They must be the "zombies" in the chess world. There was nothing I can do to fix it. Really, when you start playing or analyzing games, you'll get confused about the black and the white pieces.

That alone is already a total turn off. But it does not stop there: you can't activate the application to get the latest software updates. I didn't try installing additional engines, because I find it unnecessary to move forward with the setup.

So until now, there's no ideal way to run a ChessBase application on a Mac. You can try one option but you have deal with the setbacks. A huge gap to fill in -- a great opportunity for competitors to expand their market on.

Calling Hiarcs, Shredder, anyone?

By the way, it appears Stockfish UI does not work anymore in OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.

My setup: MacBook Pro 13-inch, Early 2011, running OS X Mountain Lion.

Round 10 Istanbul 2012 Chess Olympiad Report: Philippines vs. Vietnam (2-2)

This must be the least exciting match for Team [country]Philippines[/country] so far in the [event]Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad[/event]. The Round 10 match against [country]Vietnam[/country] ended in all-way draw. Meaning from Board 1 to Board 4, the results were unexciting draws, regardless of the matchup being fairly even to start with.

We expected hoped GM [player]Wesley So[/player] to at least pull off a win for the team, but unfortunately he was forced by GM [player]Le Quang Liem[/player] into a draw after 39 moves. [player]Wesley So[/player] posted 2 wins and 8 draws after 10 rounds of play.

Check out the match up between: Philippines vs. Vietnam.

Check out how the draws happened from following pages:

After the draw with Vietnam in Round 10, [country]Philippines[/country] is ranked No. 11 and will be up against [country]Romania[/country] in the final 11th round.

[country]Romania[/country] was seeded 25th at the start of the tournament and currently stands next to Philippines at 12th place. The players that compose Team Romania are as follows:

Round 8 Round Up: Philippines Beat England 3-1 Chess Olympiad 2012

'Upset' might not be the proper word to describe this win. After all, with how Team Philippines (Open) has been performing so far -- in the last 8 rounds, without regard of their individual ELO ratings, they are acting like a powerhouse team in this Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad.

In Board 1, Wesley So, even with black, held the 70-ELO-points higher Michael Adams of England to a draw.

In Board 2, England's Gawain Jones took as many as 101 moves before he resigned his position against Oliver Barbosa.

In Board 3, Nigel (Short) came short as Eugene (Torre) towered over him.

In Board 4, Mark Paragua managed a draw by threefold repetition.

Round 7 Results: Philippines vs. Hungary -- Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad

The veteran Eugene Torre saved the day for Team Philippines, as he managed to maneuver a win in Board 3 against the Hungarian Ferenc Berkes in Round 7 of Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad, to even the score at 2-2.

The team's goal at the start of the tournament was to be just among the top 20 finishers amidst all the countries competing in this Olympiad, but it seems they underestimated themselves. All the players' performance so far are way above their level -- their ELO ratings.

The score card of the match between the 35th seed Philippines vs. the 4th seed Hungary follows:

Round 6 Results - Istanbul 2012 Chess Olympiad (Philippines vs. Bulgaria)

The big news: a turnaround win by Oliver Barbosa vs. Kiril Georgiev on Board 2.

All analyses lead to Barbosa already losing the game beginning from his 50th move, when 7 moves later, on Georgiev's 57th move, he (Georgiev) made a big blunder, which cost him the game, and his team the match.

Just like in 2010, the Wesley So vs. Veselin Topalov matchup ended in a draw. The former world champion, GM Veselin Topalov, may have been aggressive going to the middle game, but the underdog, GM Wesley So, never lost his grounds. Eugene Torre and Mark Paragua halved their points as well with their respective opponents.

The final tally: 2.5 to 1.5 in favor of The Philippines!

Danielsen’s 31. … dxc5? is a bad move! Barbosa should be winning.

Sat, 01 Sep 2012 11:02 pm

Hannes Stefansson and Wesley So agreed to a draw in board 1 of round 5 in the Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad. Standing right now is: Philippines 0.5 – 0.5 Iceland.

Sat, 01 Sep 2012 10:38 pm

If it’s going to be a win for Barbosa and Paragua, and a draw for So and Torre, that’ll be 3-1. Not bad. I can live with that! Go Team Philippines!

Sat, 01 Sep 2012 10:30 pm

Oliver Barbosa already has a slight advantage. Deep Rybka 4.1 evaluates the game at 1.16 in favor of white.

Sat, 01 Sep 2012 10:21 pm

This is definitely a slow start for Team Philippines in this 5th round of Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad. #istanbul2012

Sat, 01 Sep 2012 9:56 pm

I guess Mark Paragua is winning after all.

Sat, 01 Sep 2012 9:38 pm

Looking at Mark Paragua’s game, I don’t that we’re going to enjoy a 4-0 win here.

Sat, 01 Sep 2012 8:21 pm

Fri, 31 Aug 2012 11:44 pm

Wesley So vs. Levon Aronian is more likely a draw. #istanbul2012 #round4

Fri, 31 Aug 2012 9:56 pm

If only Paragua and Barbosa could draw both their games and Wesley could win, then it’ll be a 2-2. #dreaming

Fri, 31 Aug 2012 9:51 pm

And Dimakiling resigned. It’s 0-1 for Philippines.

Fri, 31 Aug 2012 9:15 pm

Time pressure really makes an important factor especially when you’re both less than 5 minutes left in the clock.

Thu, 30 Aug 2012 1:14 am

Paragua could have lost after his 64th move. Good thing Vedmediuc wasn’t that accurate as well.

It’s a draw between Svetushkin and Barbosa. Currently stands at 1.5-0.5 in favor of Philippines (vs. Moldova).

Thu, 30 Aug 2012 12:41 am

GM Torre is not playing at all in this tournament?

After 5 rounds of grueling mental battle, Team Philippines (Open) ranked 11th, with 4 wins and 1 loss.

The tournament goes for recess on Sunday, September 2, 2012, and then on Monday, Team Philippines will be facing another formidable team -- Bulgaria, which is lead by a former World Champion, Veselin Topalov.

Wesley So and Veselin Topalov already went against each other in the 2010 Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, where Wesley held him to a draw.

Check out that stirring game from two years ago: Veselin Topalov vs. Wesley So [Chess Olympiad] [2010]

Bulgaria is seeded no. 10 at the start of the tournament, and currently ranked 14th coming to the 6th round.

Moreover, here's the composition of Team Bulgaria:
