The SPICE Cup Invitational 2012
The SPICE Cup Invitational is happening in St. Louis, Missouri from October 16 to 20, 2012. It is expected to be a Category 18 tournament, just four notches below the highest FIDE tournament category.

30th Chess Olympiad
Did you know that: the 30th Chess Olympiad in 1992 was held in Manila, [country]Philippines[/country]?
Here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia entry:
There were actually three (3) contingent teams from Philippines that time. The top contingent, led by GM [player]Eugene Torre[/player], finished 31st place, while the other two were 42nd and 44th -- that's out of the total 102 countries/teams competing.
And the Manila Chess Olympiad happened even before GM [player]Wesley So[/player] was born.

Following the fall of the Iron Curtain, the field of competitors was quite different from previous Olympiads. Twelve of the 15 former Soviet republics now competed as independent nations - and they all finished in the top half. Meanwhile, an all-German team was present for the first time since World War II. Of the former Yugoslav republics, Croatia, Bosnia, and Slovenia appeared independently; Serbia-Montenegro and Macedonia did not. This Olympiad also marked the final appearance of Czechoslovakia and the re-appearance of South Africa.

Philippines vs. Romania Results in Round 11 Istanbul 2012
Team [country]Philippines[/country] certainly has run out of luck in the last three rounds of the [event]Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad[/event]. It started with a devastating loss to China in Round 9, a draw to Vietnam in Round 10, and now a loss to Romania in Round 11.
[player]Wesley So[/player] in Board 1 is the top player we expected to deliver the upsets against the opposing teams, even against the higher-rated players as he used to do in the past, has settled with 2 wins and 9 draws in the course of the tournament.
The final tally for the final Round 11 is: Philippines (1) vs. Romania (3):

Round 9 Results for Team Philippines in Istanbul 2012
It was a devastating defeat for Team Philippines against China in Round 9 of Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad. The score: 3.5 vs. 1.5, in favor of China. Only Wesley So on Board 1 managed to avoid a loss -- he drew his game against another 2700+ ELO rated player Wang Hao.
These were the first losses for Eugene Torre and Mark Paragua in this tournament. So far, only Wesley So has no loss, with 2 wins and 7 draws.
There are only 2 rounds left, so we can only wish more luck to our team Philippines!

Round 8 Round Up: Philippines Beat England 3-1 Chess Olympiad 2012
'Upset' might not be the proper word to describe this win. After all, with how Team Philippines (Open) has been performing so far -- in the last 8 rounds, without regard of their individual ELO ratings, they are acting like a powerhouse team in this Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad.
In Board 1, Wesley So, even with black, held the 70-ELO-points higher Michael Adams of England to a draw.
In Board 2, England's Gawain Jones took as many as 101 moves before he resigned his position against Oliver Barbosa.
In Board 3, Nigel (Short) came short as Eugene (Torre) towered over him.
In Board 4, Mark Paragua managed a draw by threefold repetition.

Round 7 Results: Philippines vs. Hungary -- Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad
The veteran Eugene Torre saved the day for Team Philippines, as he managed to maneuver a win in Board 3 against the Hungarian Ferenc Berkes in Round 7 of Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad, to even the score at 2-2.
The team's goal at the start of the tournament was to be just among the top 20 finishers amidst all the countries competing in this Olympiad, but it seems they underestimated themselves. All the players' performance so far are way above their level -- their ELO ratings.

Round 6 Results - Istanbul 2012 Chess Olympiad (Philippines vs. Bulgaria)
The big news: a turnaround win by Oliver Barbosa vs. Kiril Georgiev on Board 2.
All analyses lead to Barbosa already losing the game beginning from his 50th move, when 7 moves later, on Georgiev's 57th move, he (Georgiev) made a big blunder, which cost him the game, and his team the match.
Just like in 2010, the Wesley So vs. Veselin Topalov matchup ended in a draw. The former world champion, GM Veselin Topalov, may have been aggressive going to the middle game, but the underdog, GM Wesley So, never lost his grounds. Eugene Torre and Mark Paragua halved their points as well with their respective opponents.
The final tally: 2.5 to 1.5 in favor of The Philippines!

Chess Olympiad 2012 Round 4 Results for Team Philippines
Team Philippines incurred its first team loss (and even its first player loss) in the fourth round in the ongoing Istanbul 2012 World Chess Cup, against one of the toughest teams -- the 3rd seed, in fact -- Armenia.
Team Armenia is of course headed by the current second highest ELO rated player in the person of Levon Aronian.
The final tally: Philippines is 1.5 as against Armenia's 2.5, as Oliver Dimakiling bowed to Gabriel Sargissian in Board 4, while the rest of the boards were draws:
Although a loss, I'd say it was a decent loss, and the team did really fought a good game. After all, they came clearly as the underdog, a 35th seed up against the 3rd seed, before the start of the round.

Philippines Ranked No. 36 at the Start of Istanbul 2012 World Chess Olympiad
Chessdom managed to rank the countries according to the ratings of their respective participants based on the August 2012 official FIDE ratings list.
Team Philippines, led by GM Wesley So (ELO 2652), has an average ELO rating of 2546 and is running 36th place based on the above criteria before the start of the tournament.

By the way, Wilson's favorite country, Australia, is ranked 60th in the same list with an average rating of 2423.
We'll surely watch out for the tournament results as they happen to check how the actual rankings will pan out in the end.

GM Wesley So Knocked Out in World Chess Cup 2011
Unfortunately, GM Wesley So failed to deliver the supposedly biggest upset in the second round of the World Chess Cup 2011 vs. the top seed GM Sergey Karjakin.
The second round between So and Karjakin started silently with draws for the first two standard games. It went to the tie-break with a draw in the first game while So was playing white. When it was Karjakin's turn to play white, So committed a bad move at his 21st move. The game immediately wound up to the end game where Karjakin is up by a pawn, and eventually won the game.
This will send Wesley So packing for the Philippines. While there are no more Filipinos bidding in the tournament, we can now concentrate on analyzing some of the good games here.

Wesley So and Sergey Karjakin Off to Tie-breaks
After the draw in the second game in Round 2 of World Chess Cup 2011, the match proceeds to a tie-break tomorrow. 2 Rapid games and if necessary blitz games are to be held tomorrow between GM Wesley So and GM Sergey Karjakin in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.
GM Wesley So Slides Down to No. 91 in September 2011 FIDE Ratings List
FIDE recently released the official FIDE Ratings List Top 100 chess players in the world, and while losing some 3 ELO rating points at 2655, GM Wesley So of the Philippines slides down to No. 91.
3 players are still a member of the elite 2800 club, while GM Vladimir Kramnik is just around the corner to further join them.

Wesley So Proceeds to Round 2 in World Chess Cup 2011
In the tie-break, GM Wesley So (ELO 2658) wins with white in the first tie-break game and agreed to a draw in a winning position with 2 pawns up in the second game to secure a win in the Round 1 of World Chess Cup 2011 against GM Liren Ding of China.This is definitely a day of celebration for team Philippines. But wait, he's up against the top seed GM Sergey Karjakin (ELO 2788) of Russia in the second round.
Will this be the biggest upset so far in the tournament? We'll find out later today August 31, 2011 at around 5PM Philippine time. We'll surely watch out for it! Go Wesley So!

Wesley So vs. Liren Ding Round 1 World Chess Cup 2011
Now the match stands at 1-1 after both GM Wesley So of the Philippines and GM Liren Ding of China drew both their games at the first round of World Chess Cup 2011.

We have to watch out for the tie-breaks tomorrow, including rapid games, and if necessary -- blitz games.

Wesley So Draws with Liren Ding in Game 1 Round of World Chess Cup 2011
GM Wesley So playing white drew his first game against Liren Ding in Round 1 of World Chess Cup 2011.

Although the computer analysis particularly from Stockfish and Rybka indicated a slight advantage for white up to the 37th moves from each side, it was slight indeed and Wesley failed to materialize on.

World Chess Cup 2011
World Chess Cup 2011 is underway on this weekend. The round 1 games will commence on Sunday, August 28, 2011, 15:00 Khanty Mansiysk, Russia local time -- which converts to Sunday, August 28, 2011, 17:00 Philippine Time. That's 5PM on Sunday.
Two players are participating from the Philippines, GM Wesley So (ELO 2658) and GM Mark Paragua (ELO 2545).
Paragua (108th seed) will be up against the 21st seed, an elite chess player from England, GM Michael Adams (ELO 2715), in the first round. So, on the other hand, was seeded 64th and will be up against the 65th from China, GM Liren Ding (ELO 2654). Obviously, the So vs. Ding battle is expected to be more exciting.
